Renters using the Fairfax real estate website domain have been targeted in an international scam. Renters enquiring about a ficticious apartment were told that the owner was overseas and to send $1,000 via Western Union and the keys would be sent to them. It would appear that the address of the apartment was ficticious and that the rent being offered was well below the market rate. Fairfax responded by cancelling the adverts and suspending access for private landlords. This response appears to be over the top and unnecessary. Anybody who sends a large amount of cash overseas to someone they have not met for an apartment they have not seen probably should not be allowed out in public on their own.
